After a whirlwind 2011 tour schedule of nearly 20 concerts across the length of the country, the NZGQ is quickly developing a following with invitations to perform both locally and overseas. Highlights for the 2012 season include an up-coming New Zealand premiere of the Rodrigo Guitar Quartet Concerto Andaluz with the Nelson Symphony. NZGQ members, Owen Moriarty, Tim Watanabe, Christopher Hill and Jane Curry have garnered acclaim as soloists on concert stages around the world and in a multitude of international guitar competitions, with each member contributing their individual strengths toward creating an exciting, dynamic and engaging ensemble. Repertoire for the 2012 concert series ranges from the classical to the contemporary, featuring expert arrangements of Bach’s Third Brandenburg Concerto and  Manual de Falla’s El Amor Brujo as well as cutting edge home grown music by New Zealand composers.

I couldn’t praise too highly the group’s realization of the sixth of JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti. In true Baroque fashion, the music translated into the new instrumental medium as if fitting a perfectly-tailored glove – and the ensemble’s rendition of the individual lines brought so many deliciously-phrased strands of delight together with impeccable balance and osmotic teamwork
